News: Narayanasamy’s office bears brunt of Tamil outfit’s ire

Activists of a Tamil outfit pelted stones at the camp office of Union Minister V Narayanasamy during protests held here on Wednesday.

The activists were protesting against the Centre’s failure in coming out with amendments to the US resolution that would come up for voting in UNHRC.

Activists of Thanthai Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam, led by Ilango, burnt Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi in effigies at Anna statue, and later pelted stones at the Minister’s office, close to the protest venue.

Glasses of windows were shattered in the stone pelting. Tension gripped the area after the incident. However, the situation was brought under control after police detained 89 activists of the Tamil outfit. Additional personnel were deployed in the area following the incident.

It may be recalled that activists of Tamizhar Vazhvurimai Katchi (TVK) were cane-charged a few days ago, following their attempt to enter the Minister’s office premises.

Condemning the lathi-charge, federation of people’s rights secretary K Sugumaran had demanded that the collector inquire into the incident.

Sugumaran told reporters here that the TVK activists were trying to register their protest against the Centre’s stand on Sri Lankan Tamils issue, peacefully. However, the activists were beaten up by Congress workers and lathicharged by police.

He said that the Congress-led government at the Centre had not taken steps to protect of Sri Lankan Tamils.
