News: Plea for free treatment at Jipmer

The Federation for Peoples Rights here today urged the union government to take steps to continue free treatment at the Jipmer Hospital here.

Federation Secretary G Sugumaran, in a statement, said that all these years, Jipmer was providing free treatment and at the instigation of the UPA Government, the Jipmer management had imposed user charges on patients with more than Rs.2500 income a month.

Free treatment and free medical education were assured at the time of introducing the act to make Jipmer autonomous and the present act of collecting user charges amounts to violation of the promises given in the Act, he alleged. Mr.Sugumaran said patients from not only Puducherry but also from the entire south were coming to Jipmer for treatment and the collection of user charges will certainly hit them hard.

Hence, the Union government should intervene to ensure free treatment at the institution, he added.
