News: Panel sought to review regional quota

Member of Legislative Assembly K. Lakshminarayanan and the Federation for People’s rights have written to Lieutenant Governor Iqbal Singh requesting the withdrawal of regional reservation.

In his letter, Mr. Lakshminarayanan said that as there is no regional reservation for students belonging to the Puducherry region, more than 100 students are affected, even though they have obtained higher marks than the students of the other regions.

He requested Mr. Singh to take immediate action to reserve seats in professional colleges as done in the case of other regions based on population.

The Federation for People’s Rights said the regional reservation was brought into force in 2006 by which students from Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam are given an 18 per cent, 4 per cent and 3 per cent quota respectively. All political parties and social organisations have expressed fear that it would lead to social disharmony by creating a division among people of the Union Territory. They also feared that this “unconstitutional practice” would be against the Supreme Court judgment, pronounced following Mandal Commission recommendations in Indira Sahany’s case, the letter said.

The federation also requested that a high-level committee be constituted to review the regional reservation and submit recommendations based on the feedback.
