The Federation for People’s Rights here today urged the administration to scrap the regional reservation in admissions to professional courses in the union territory after enacting proper legislations and implement it after getting the nod of the Union Government. Federation Secretary G Sugumaran, in a statement today, said the Puducherry administration implemented the regional reservation on August 10,2006 through a G O, providing 18 percent reservation for Karaikal, four and three percent for Mahe and Yanam regions respectively.
On May 25,2010, the government, through another GO, had reserved the balance 75 per cent for Puducherry region. Political parties and social organizations here objected to this fearing it would lead to disharmony among the people of Puducherry by creating a division They also feared that this ‘unconstitutional’ practice would be against the Supreme Court judgement following Mandal Commission recommendation in Indira Sahany’s case.
