News: Judicial probe into Yanam violence urged

Puducherry, Jan 31 : The Federation for Peoples Rights here today urged the administration to order a judicial inquiry into the violence in Yanam Region of the union territory.

In a statement here today, Federation Secretary G Sugumaran regretted that even after demands from different political parties for a judicial probe,the government was yet to initiate any action in the issue. In the wage hike issue in a private factory at Yanam, a trade union leader was killed allegedly in police custody which triggered the violence in which an executive of the company was killed by the workers and police opened fire injuring nine workers.

Mr Sugumaran charged the Puducherry Administration, instead of initiating action against the culprits,was trying to hide the facts of police atrocities and the Chief Minister’s continued silence on the issue needed to be condemned. He also said the federation had constituted a fact-finding committee comprising human rights activists of southern region which would visit Yanam in the first week of February .
