The Federation of People’s Rights (FPR), Puducherry, on Wednesday thanked the National Human Rights Commission for its intervention in securing compensation of Rs.3 lakh to the kin of an accused who died under mysterious circumstances at the Kalapet jail in 2009.
G. Sugumaran, secretary, FPR, said he received information that the Chief Superintendent of Jails, Puducherry, recently handed over cheques to Aryamala and Neelaveni, wife and mother of Saravanan respectively, based on order issued by the NHRC, which studied the circumstances that led to the death of Saravanan on June 25, 2009. Mr. Sugumaran also thanked the Prison Department for providing compensation.
