The Federation for People’s Rights here today urged the administration to take proper action against those responsible for the death of Saravanan, a maison hailing from Tindivanam in Tamil Nadu who died in a mysterious circumstance in Puducherry Prison in 2009.
In a statement here today, Federation Secretary G Sugumaran thanked National Human Rights Commission for awarding a compensation of Rs three lakh to the family of Saravanan and said this proved that the police and jail authorities were responsible for his death. Hence, stringent action be initiated against the responsible, he demanded.
Mr Sugumaran said, Saravanan against whom Kalapet and Odeansalai police had registered cases and arrested, was found dead inside the prison on June 25, 2009. His wife Ariyamala lodged a complaint with the National Human Rights Commission and higher Puducherry government officials. The jail department had also sent a detailed report to the commission on the death of Saravanan.
After examining these, the National Human Rights Commission had directed the Puducherry Jail department to pay a compensation of Rs 2.5 lakh to the wife of Saravanan and Rs 50,000 to his mother which was given on December 18, last year.
