News: Angammal Colony incident: 3 police personnel suspended

Three police personnel, including two special sub-Inspectors attached to the Pallapatti police station here, have been placed under suspension for dereliction of duty in the Angammal colony incident.

Another officer, Inspector Anandan, has been shifted to the Madurai range with immediate effect.

Former DMK minister Veerapandi S. Arumugam has been arrested in connection with the incident.

Police sources told The Hindu here that based on a complaint by K. Gansesan of Angammal Colony that 30 hooligans vandalised their colony in the early hours of June 2, torching a hut and razing 10 others, City Commissioner K. C. Mahali conducted an enquiry and also reviewed the action taken by the Pallapatti police in this regard.

“The Commissioner was not satisfied,” a senior police officer said.

Based on the preliminary enquiry, he placed special sub-inspectors Devendiran and Pannerselvam along with head constable Govindan, who were on duty at the time of the incident at the Pallapati police station, under suspension pending further enquiry.

He also ordered the transfer of the Station Officer.

A fact-finding team of six human rights activists, led by Marx of the People’s Union for Human Rights and G. Sukumaran of the Federation for People’s Rights, Puducherry, met the affected residents of the colony.
