The Federation for People’s Rights here today urged the administration to order a CBI probe into the alleged incident of police personnel swindling gold ornaments they had seized from thieves. Federation Secretary G Sugumaran in a statement here today said the Puducherry police arrested some thieves of Chidambaram in Tamil Nadu and seized about 1000 sovereigns of gold ornaments form them. Instead of producing them before the court and handing them over to the owners, the police personnel showed only 100 sovereigns and swindled the rest which was revealed by the thieves in the court, Mr Sugumaran said. Expressing happiness that the new IGP Ranveer Singh had ordered for an inquiry into the incident, Mr Sugumaran said the act of the police personnel had tarnished the image of the entire police force. Cases be registered against those involved and they be arrested, he demanded. Mr Sugumaran also pointed out that since the allegation was against police personnel, an inquiry by the Puducherry police would not yield any result and hence a CBI probe should be ordered. He said the federation would be forwarding memorandum to the Union Home Minster and Home Secretary in this regard.
