News: Activists arrested for attempt to stage protest!

A group of persons including some activists of political parties were arrested on Wednesday when they attempted to stage a protest near the central jail here.
According to police, the activists including State committee member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) T.Murugan and Bahujan Samaj Party leader Thanga Kalaimaran gathered before the jail.

The activists also raised slogans flaying the prison authorities for the treatment meted out to the inmates of the jail. Several prisoners were on fast from Monday accusing the jail authorities of treating them shabbily, the activists alleged.

However, police and jail authorities did not confirm these reports. The arrested persons were released later, police said. Secretary of the Federation of People’s Rights G.Sugumaran had sought the intervention of the Chief Judge, Chief Secretary and Inspector-General of Police to depute an officer of higher cadre to enquire the issues relating to the alleged prison unrest.

In separate telegrams sent to them, he also stressed the need for appointing a committee comprising political and human rights activists to monitor the jail.
