News: Federation urges Centre, Tamil Nadu to release Lankan Tamils

Puducherry, Oct 29 : Strongly condemning the detention of Sri Lankan Tamils in refugee camps even after the end of the war, the Federation for Peoples Rights today urged the Centre and the Tamil Nadu Government to initiate measures for their release.

A resolution to this effect was adopted at a meeting of the Federation here yesterday, its Secretary G Sugumaran said in a release here.

Another resolution urged the administration to take immediate steps to devolve powers to the village panchayats and to ensure the implementation of the ‘Panchayati Raj Act’.

A resolution urged for the remission of sentence and release of all life-convicts, who had already undergone seven years in prison on the occasion of the birthday of the AICC President and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi.

The meeting also condoled the demise of human rights activist K Balagopal, and Desigan, an office-bearer of Tani Tamizh Kazhagam (TTK).
