The city-based Federation For People’s Rights today urged the Administration to take steps to conduct the swearing in ceremony of Mr Iqbal Singh as the Lt Governor of Puducherry on July 27 in the presence of the Chief Judge of Puducherry instead of the Chief Justice of the Madras High Court.
In a statement here, Federation Secretary G Sugumaran pointed out that the Chief Justice of the Madras High Court administering the oath of office to Mr Singh, would not only violate the legal precedence, but also would be in contravention to the established tradition followed in Puducherry from the French regime.
Any violation of this precedence would be construed as a dishonour to the entire people of the Union Territory, he said.
Mr Sugumaran said though there was no specific provision in the Constitution, the principles and procedure followed by a longer period became statuatory binding and it should be respected with dignity.
Memorandum in this regard would be sent to the President, Chief Justie of India, Madras High Court Chief Justice and Law and Home Secretaries, Government of India among others, he added.
It may be noted that the Puducherry Administration had reportedly decided to conduct the swearnig in ceremony of Mr Singh with the Madras High Court Chief Justice administering the oath of office instead of the Puducherry Chief Judge which was in practice hitherto.
