Chennai, April 13: People’s Union for Human Rights (PUHR) and other human rights activists on Monday expressed concern over disappearance of a senior leader of the CPI (ML).
The reported arrest of senior functionary of the CPI (ML), Tamil Vanan (63) of the extremist Left party at Vikkiravandi in Villupuram district on Sunday morning has created flutter as he was not produced in any court of law till Monday afternoon.
“Tamil Vanan is a well-known activist of the CPI (ML). The police should have produced him and those arrested with him at a court of law within 24 hours of the arrest. After the rights activists raised an alarm about their arrest, Q branch has accepted that they have arrested them,” said G.Sugumaran, Federation of people’s rights.
“Considering that Mr Tamilvanan is a seniormost activist, the police should have produced him in a court or at a magistrate’s residence within 24 hours of arrest according to the Supreme Court’s guidelines,” pointed out Mr A.Marx, state organiser, PUHR.
However, the police produced Mr Tamil Vanan in a Tiurpathur court and remanded him on Monday evening after the intervention of the rights activists.
