FPR condemns arrest of Nakkeeran Editor Gopal

Federation for Peoples Rights (FPR) here on Tuesday condemned the arrest of Tamil Weekly Magazine Nakkeeran Editor R R Gopal at Chennai Airport.

Gopal was arrested by the Tamil Nadu Police at the Airport on a Complaint from Raj Bhavan that he had filed “baseless” news against the Governor.

In a statement, FPR Secretary G Sugumaran said that the arrest of Gopal is against the ‘freedom of press’ and ‘freedom of expression’ and demanded that the case against him be withdrawn and he be released forthwith.

Sugumaran said if Gopal had filed any baseless news against the Tamil Nadu Governor, a defamation case could have been filed against him so that the court will decide on whether he did something wrong or not.

Instead, Governor Banwarilal Purohit by using his powers had allegedly ensured registering cases against Gopal and the police arresting him need to be condemned strongly.

Further, he was charged under Sedition Act, which the Law Commission had recently recommended to the Union Government to taken steps for scrapping it. This is a clear case of initiating punitive action against Mr Gopal, he added.

Meanwhile, condemning the incident, Puducherry Journalists Union is scheduled to organize an agitation at the Kamaraj statue junction here this evening.
