News: Plea on ST status for Pondy tribals

The Federation for People’s Rights here today urged the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes to recommend and take steps for the issuance of Presidential Notification under Article 342 of Indian Constitution for declaring ST status to the tribal people here by the Government of India so that they could enjoy all the benefits being extended to the ST Communities throughout the country.

In a memorandum submitted to the Chairperson of the Commission Mr Rameswar Oraon, who is currently on a visit to the union territory, Federation secretary G Sugumaran said the ST Communities had been living in Puducherry Union Territory since several decades even prior to the Merger of Puducherry from the French Regime to Indian Union in 1954.

These Communities are fighting for declaration of ST status since 32 years in various forms.

This struggle is supported by various Political Parties and Social Organisations of Puducherry including the Federation for People’s Rights.
