The Federation for People’s Rights here today urged the administration to constitute an enquiry commission comprising educationalists and psycologists and headed by a retired high court judge to go into the incidents of suicides by students of higher educational institutions in the union territory.
In a statement here today, Federation Secretary G Sugumaran referred to the suicide of Vinodini, a first year student of a private engineering college here three days back, in which police registered cases against four teachers of the college on charges of abetting the crime and arrested them yesterday and said it had become a regular feature that students of higher educational institutions commit suicide due to mental stress and it seems the college management or the government is not concerned about this. Several lapses in the present system of education,a competetive attitude to score more marks etc are leading to suicides and hence the government should take steps for the setting up of an enquiry commission,he said adding the federation would soon hold a debate on the issue.
