The Federation for People’s Rights here today welcomed the judgment of the three member judges in the Supreme Court led by Chief Justice Sadasivam bring down the sentence of 15 persons in the Veerappan case from death to life imprisonment.
In a statement here today, Federation Secretary G Sugumaran said the bench noticed delay in taking a decision on mercy petitions by the government while delivering the judgment.
Mr Sugumaran hoped that based on this judgment, the sentence of those in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case and all other capital punishment sentences would be reduced to life.
Thanking the judges, Mr Sugumaran said at a time when the abolishment of capital punishment was being pressed, this judgment would certainly strengthen this demand.
