PUDUCHERRY : Around 300 activists belonging to parties and organisations sympathetic to the banned Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam took out a rally to the French Consulate here to protest the arrest of 17 Sri Lankan Tamils linked to the LTTE in Paris last month.
Police stopped the rally, which started from the Old Bus Stand, at Ambalatadayar Street junction before it could reach the Consulate.
Later, representatives of the protesting political parties and organizations submitted a memorandum to French Consul General Joelle Rayet. In its memorandum, the representatives urged the French Government to release the 17 immediately. They called the arrests illegal and said the arrested people were working for “an NGO catering to the needs of Sri Lankan Tamils”.
The representatives include leaders of Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, Meenavar Viduthalai Vengai, Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and Federation for People’s Rights. The Puducherry unit of the Bahujan Samaj Party also participated in the protest.
