News: Memebrs of Federation for People’s Rights held demo

Puducherry, Aug 31: Members of Puducherry-based Federation for People’s Rights today held a demonstration near the Singaravelar statue here to press for abolishing capital punishment awarded to the three convict in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case.

Federation Secrertary G Sugumaran pointed out that the death sentance in the T V Vaitheeswaran Vs Tamil Nadu state case was reduced to life as the sentance was not implemented even after two years of order.

In the case of Perarivalan, Santhan and Murugan, the three accused in the Rajiv Gandhi assasination case, the death sentence was not executed even after 12 years and as the accused were languishing in prison for over 20 years, there was all justification in reducing the sentence to life.

He said death sentence was not a punishment acceptable in a civilized society. As per the records of Amnesty Insternational 139 countries had already abolished capital punishment, he added.

Volunteers of different organisations, including Tamizhar Desiya Iyyakkam, Singaravelar Munnetra Kazhagam, All India Forward Block, Ambedkar Makkal Padai, among others, partook in the demonstration.
