News: CBI probe sought

STAFF REPORTER

The Federation for People’s Rights has urged the Ministry of Home Affairs to order an inquiry by the Central Bureau of Investigation into allegations against a section of police personnel that they siphoned off gold ornaments worth crores of rupees seized from accused arrested in theft cases.

In a letter to Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram, federation secretary G. Sugumaran said the allegation was that police seized around 1,000 sovereigns of ornaments from three persons involved in several theft cases. However, on record the quantum of gold seized was shown as only around 100 sovereigns, he said.

Though the Crime and Intelligence wing conducted an inquiry, officers were not questioned properly, he said, adding that some of those involved are senior-level officers and, therefore, an inquiry should be conducted by an independent agency.
