News: Closure of Chemfab Alkalis Ltd demanded

The Federation for People’s Rights today demanded closure of Chemfab Alkalis Ltd, following the hospitalisation of over 300 people due to chlorine gas leak.

In a statement here, Federation Secretary G Sugumaran also demanded a judicial enquiry into the incident by a sitting High Court judge, Mr Sugumaran recalled the agitations held by the Federation when five people were killed in a gas leak at Sashun Drugs in the same Kalapet area. He said the government failed to close down the unit till now. When they conducted a survey, it came to light that the students of Pondicherry University, Navodaya School and Pondicherry Engineering College were being affected by the smoke. Hence, the government should take steps to ensure closure of hazardous industrial units here, he demanded.

Meanwhile, all those admitted to hospitals following the gas leak were discharged, while the workers of Chemfab Alkalis Ltd, which was temporarily closed, organsied an agitation inside the factory demanding immediate reopening of the unit.
