News: Rights Forum plea for judicial probe

The Puducherry-based Federation for People’s Rights today urged the administration to order a judicial probe into the alleged suicide of a woman in front of the Lawspet Police Station here yesterday.

In a statement today, Federation Secretary G Sugumaran said as per his information, Bhanumathi committed suicide inside the police station. The police, “in a bid to twist things,” registered a case of suicide, he alleged.

Mr Sugumaran claimed since her son married a girl against her wishes and took shelter inside the police station due to opposition from both the families, Bhanumathi came to the station with a knife and attempted to attack her son Vijayakumar which was thwarted by the police.

She later committed suicide inside the police station by stabbing on herself in the chest, he alleged.

He said when cases of love marriages were being taken up by the all women police station, the Lawspet Police registering the case was wrong.

Hence, the case be registered as the incident having occurred inside the police station and a judicial probe ordered to take action against the erring police personnel,he added.
