An office superintendent with the electricity department here allegedly committed suicide by hanging at his residence early today.
According to police when Pushparaj was working as the superintendent in the police department, there was an allegation of corruption against him and he was summoned to Chennai by the CBI for interrogation yesterday.
He along with sub-inspector Dominic went to Chennai yesterday and after the interrogation, returned to Puducherry around midnight. He was found hanging in the store room of his house this morning.
It was suspected that Pushparaj might have taken the extreme step out of fear that the CBI may involve him also in the corruption case.
Orleanpet police sent the body to the Government General Hospital for post-mortem.
Meanwhile, Federation for People’s Rights here demanded a CBI probe into the alleged suicide.
In a statement Federtation Secretary G Sugumaran claimed that as mystery shrouded the death of Pushparaj, Puducherry administration should order a CBI probe. He said said it was also stated that some rowdies had threatened Pushparaj not to reveal the truth during CBI interrogation. This was at the instance of a senior police officer here.
