News: SC verdict in Rajiv Case welcomed

The Federation for People’s Rights here today welcomed the Supreme Court verdict commuting the death sentence of the three accused in the Rajiv Gandhi Assassination case to life.

In a statement here today,Federation Secretary G.Sugumaran said that the bench headed by Chief Justice P Sadasivam had commutted the death sentence to life for 15 convicts in the Veerappan Case on January 21 when he ruled death sentence could be commuted in case of undue delay in considering a mercy petetion and adopted the same principle in this case also while commuting the death sentences of Murugan,Santhan and Perarivalan.

Mr Sugumaran said the two historic judgements given by Chief Justice Sadasivam should be etched in golden letters and demanded steps for abolishing capital punishement from the Indian law book.

He also demanded the release of all the convicts languishing in the Vellore Central Prison in the Rajiv Gandhi Assassination Case.
