News: Remove capital punishment: Rights orgn

Puducherry, Nov 22 : Subsequent to the hanging of terrorist Kasab,the Federation for People’s Rights here today demanded the capital punishment be deleted from the law book.

In a statement here today, Federation Secretary G Sugumaran said at a time support againdst capital punishment is gaining strength all over the world,the secret execution of Kasab was shocking to human rights activists. There is no second opinion that stringent punishment be accorded to culprits but at the same time it was the opinion of human rights activists that the capital punishment which was against the human rights should not be there.

Mr Sugumaran said 309 persons were sentenced to death in the country and after Independence, 52 were executed. When so many persons were there, why Kasab was executed in a hurry, he wondered.
